Renting for Black Isn't Like Renting for UberX
UberX accepts a wide range of everyday cars. Black is narrower. Uber's Uber Black driver page sets requirements for the vehicle, the driver's rating, insurance and permits, and a rental only takes care of the vehicle. The rest depends on you and your Uber account.
That's why we don't call our SUVs approved for Black. The Yukon and Tahoe are models on Uber's Black SUV list and ours are black-on-black, but Uber decides final vehicle and driver eligibility when you add the SUV to your account. Check your own eligibility in the Uber driver app before you apply.

Uber Black SUV Requirements at a Glance

- Vehicle age: the model year must be no older than 5 years
- Color: a black exterior with a black leather or vegan leather interior
- Make and model: only specific models qualify. The Black SUV list includes the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon
- Rating: 4.85 or higher, based on your most recent 500 rated trips, per Uber's Uber Black driver page. One Uber help article says 4.9, so check the current number in the app
- Insurance: commercial auto insurance is required. Personal auto insurance does not qualify
- Permits: any permits your city requires to operate a commercial livery vehicle
- Registration: the vehicle doesn't need to be registered in your name, but you must be listed as an insured driver on its policy (Uber vehicle requirements)
Renting vs Buying an SUV for Uber Black
Buying a late-model full-size SUV to drive Black usually means a vehicle loan or a large cash outlay, and it starts a five-year clock. Once the model year falls outside Uber's window, the SUV no longer meets the Black age rule, no matter what you still owe on it.
Renting trades ownership for flexibility. There's no vehicle loan, the age-out risk isn't yours, and you aren't signing up for a long-term commitment while you learn whether Black works for you. If you already know you'll drive Black for years, buying may make more sense, and that's worth running through your own numbers. Either way, Uber's insurance, rating and permit requirements still apply to you.
What Affects Earnings on Uber Black
We don't publish earnings figures, because they depend on things neither of us controls. These are the factors that matter most:
- Fare per trip: Black fares are higher than UberX fares, but Black requests can come less often, which is one reason Uber lets Black drivers also accept UberX and UberXL trips
- Where you drive: airport arrivals, resort stays, conventions and big weeks like the WM Phoenix Open and Barrett-Jackson bring premium riders to the Valley
- When you drive: demand shifts with the seasons, with golf, spring training and resort travel concentrated in the cooler months

Uber doesn't publish a minimum trip count. Its Uber Black driver page mentions vehicle, trip and rating criteria without giving a number, and the figures you'll see on other websites are third-party estimates, not Uber policy. Your Uber driver app is the place to check whether your account is eligible.
Does the SUV need to be registered in my name?
No. Uber's vehicle requirements say the vehicle doesn't need to be registered in your name to qualify, but you must be listed as an insured driver on the vehicle's insurance policy, or Uber won't approve the vehicle.
How do I add a rented SUV to my Uber account?
In general, you add the vehicle in the Uber driver app and upload the documents Uber asks for, such as the registration and proof of insurance. Uber then reviews the vehicle and your documents. Screens and document requirements can change, so follow the prompts in your app. Our Uber Black requirements guide walks through the steps.
Can I also take UberX or UberXL trips in the SUV?
Uber says that when you're online, you can choose to receive only Uber Black trip requests, or also accept UberX and/or UberXL trips. You set those preferences in your Uber driver app.
Do I need an Arizona permit to drive Uber Black?
Uber requires Black drivers to hold all permits their city requires to operate a commercial livery vehicle. We don't give permit advice, and the rules can change, so confirm current permit requirements with Uber and with ADOT (start with ADOT's livery and limousine FAQ) before you take Black trips.
