Uber Black SUV Requirementsin Phoenix (2026)

What Uber says you need to drive Uber Black and Black SUV: the vehicle, your rating, insurance and permits, with links to Uber's own pages. Requirements change, so the Uber driver app is always the final word.

    • Commercial insurance
    • Permits & adding a rental

    Where These Requirements Come From

Everything here is quoted or summarized from Uber's public pages, checked in September 2026, with links to the source. Uber updates its requirements and its own pages don't always agree, so your Uber driver app is the final word. Confirm there before you rent or buy a vehicle for Black.

We rent 2025 GMC Yukons and Chevrolet Tahoes to drivers who want to drive Black SUV. We're not Uber and can't approve anyone for Black. Uber decides final vehicle and driver eligibility.

How to Add a Rented Vehicle to Your Uber Account

General steps. Screens and document requirements in the Uber driver app can change.

    1. 1

      Get listed on the policy

Uber says you must be listed as an insured driver on the vehicle's insurance policy, or the vehicle won't be approved.

    2. 2

Add the vehicle in the app

In the Uber driver app, add the vehicle to your account.

    3. 3

      Upload the documents

Upload the registration and proof of insurance Uber asks for. The registration doesn't need to be in your name.

    4. 4

      Wait for Uber's review

Uber reviews the vehicle and your documents and decides which trip options, such as Black SUV, you qualify for.

    Vehicle Requirements

Uber's Uber Black driver page sets three vehicle rules: the model year must be no older than 5 years, the vehicle must have a black exterior and a black leather or vegan leather interior, and only specific makes and models qualify. The five-year rule rolls forward each year; an older help article still says "2020 and newer", so go by the rolling rule and your app.

For Black SUV, Uber's rider page lists models including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and Lincoln Navigator. It names models, not trims, so check a specific vehicle in Uber's eligible vehicles tool. The vehicle doesn't need to be registered in your name (vehicle requirements).

    Driver Rating and Trip Requirements

Uber's driver page says all drivers using Uber Black must maintain a 4.85 rating or above, based on your most recent 500 rated trips. If your rating drops below 4.85, Uber says it's reassessed after your next 50 trips. One Uber help-center article lists 4.9 instead, so check the current number in your Uber driver app.

Uber doesn't publish a minimum number of completed trips for Black. Numbers quoted on other websites are third-party estimates, not Uber policy.

    Insurance Requirements

Uber's driver page says drivers using Uber Black must be professional drivers with commercial auto insurance, and that personal auto insurance does not qualify. Uber's vehicle requirements add that you must be listed as an insured driver on the vehicle's insurance policy, or the vehicle won't be approved on the platform.

If you rent from us, you go through our standard rideshare insurance steps during approval, and we'll go over how Uber's commercial insurance requirement for Black, including being listed on the policy, applies to your rental.

    Permits in Arizona

Uber requires Black drivers to have all permits their city requires to operate a commercial livery vehicle. At the state level, ADOT handles vehicle-for-hire licensing, and its livery and limousine FAQ covers permits for livery, limousine and transportation network companies.

Permit rules can change and may depend on how you drive, so we don't give permit advice. Confirm current permit requirements with Uber and ADOT before you start accepting Black trips.

Uber Black vs Uber Black SUV

Uber Black is Uber's premium ride option. Uber Black SUV is the larger version, which Uber says seats up to 6 riders. Uber lists Phoenix and Scottsdale among its Uber Black cities and Phoenix among its Black SUV cities.

Uber's driver page covers both options together. The difference is the vehicle: which option it can serve depends on its make and model, and full-size SUVs like the Tahoe and Yukon appear on the Black SUV list.

Uber Black vs UberX for Drivers

UberX is Uber's everyday ride option and accepts a much wider range of vehicles. Black adds the requirements on this page: a vehicle from Uber's list, black-on-black color rules, a 4.85 rating minimum and commercial insurance. In return, Black fares are higher per trip than UberX.

You don't have to choose one or the other. Uber says that when you're online, you can choose to receive only Uber Black trip requests, or also accept UberX and/or UberXL trips.

Not Eligible for Uber Black Yet?

If your rating isn't at Uber's Black minimum yet, or you're just getting started with rideshare, begin with everyday rides. Our Uber car rentals are for drivers who want a car for standard Uber driving.

When you meet Uber's Black requirements, come back for a 2025 GMC Yukon or 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe at $700 a week.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements for Uber Black?

According to Uber's Uber Black driver page: a model year no older than 5 years; a black exterior with a black leather or vegan leather interior; an eligible make and model; a 4.85+ rating over your most recent 500 rated trips; commercial auto insurance; and any permits your city requires for a commercial livery vehicle. Confirm the current requirements in your Uber driver app.

Is the Uber Black rating requirement 4.85 or 4.9?

Uber's Uber Black driver page says 4.85, based on your most recent 500 rated trips. One Uber help-center article says 4.9. Because Uber's own pages disagree, check the current requirement in your Uber driver app.

How many trips do I need before I can drive Uber Black?

Uber doesn't publish a minimum trip count. Its Uber Black driver page mentions vehicle, trip and rating criteria without giving a number, and the figures you'll see on other websites are third-party estimates, not Uber policy. Your Uber driver app is the place to check whether your account is eligible.

Can I use a rental car for Uber Black?

Uber's vehicle requirements say a vehicle doesn't need to be registered in your name, but you must be listed as an insured driver on its policy, and Black requires commercial auto insurance. Uber reviews every vehicle you add, including a rental, and makes the final decision.

Do I need an Arizona permit to drive Uber Black?

Uber requires Black drivers to hold all permits their city requires to operate a commercial livery vehicle. We don't give permit advice, and the rules can change, so confirm current permit requirements with Uber and with ADOT (start with ADOT's livery and limousine FAQ) before you take Black trips.

Are the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon eligible for Uber Black SUV?

Both are on Uber's Black SUV list. Uber doesn't publish trims on that page, and the vehicle must also be black with a black leather or vegan leather interior and a model year no older than 5 years. Use Uber's eligible vehicles tool for your city, and remember that Uber decides final eligibility.
